Decluttering After Christmas

Jan 4, 2021 | Blog

With the holiday season almost behind us, it is time to start looking to the new year ahead. Many people will adjust their lives around to fit the various items and clutter that piles up year after year. However, 2021 is as good of a time as ever to start decluttering after Christmas.

Clutter may not exactly look like trash, piles of papers on your desk, or plates and silverware needed for your home. It often takes form in keepsakes and small items that we have added unneeded sentimental value too. Take time when looking at your items and determine if it adds value to your life. If it contributes to stress, it might be the right decision to get rid of it.

Now that we have determined what clutter is, what should be done with it?

Decluttering After Christmas

Get Organized

Sorting out clutter, while the most important step, is not the end of the road. Sorting through your items and deciding what can be reused, through an organization such as Goodwill or Salvation army, recycled, or thrown away can additionally help you part with items that have sentimental value. You can read more about our donation centers here! An excel or Google sheets document is perfect to list out the items that are going and where they will end up. Sticky notes that are color coordinated can also be easy visual markers. Once separated and organized, what is the best way to remove the clutter from decluttering after Christmas?

Over the past several years, they have practically demonstrated how simple living can improve various aspects of your life, by minimizing, organizing, and decluttering the various aspects of home and life.

The Marie Kondo Method:

While not a traditional tool, Marie Kondo has revolutionized practical approaches to decluttering. The secret? Sparking Joy. How does this help, when there is a mountain of items that have been piling up? Going through each item, feel it, and ask yourself without overthinking, does this spark joy in my life? If it does, keep it, if it does not, get rid of it! This simple technique helps to drastically reduce the stress of unwanted items
